Large turnout for Nordic racing weekend
The Auburn Ski Club hosted a pair of snowy Junior National Qualifying races this past weekend, starting with the Freestyle Sprints on Saturday and ending with the Snowshoe Thompson Classic on Sunday.
Both races were well attended, with 116 racers on Saturday and 132 the next day. The numbers were bolstered by a large group of junior skiers from the Pacific Northwest.
In the Freestyle Sprints, Spencer Eusden claimed the top spot in a field of 53 male racers, while Dylan Syben was second and Shane Christian third. They were followed by Julien Bordes, Jordan McElroy, Peter Carroll, Casey Shannon, Max Millslagle, Ryan St. Clair and Aaron Deeter rounding out the top 10.
Hannah Halvorsen was the top woman among 39 skiers, Emily Blackmer was second and Joanne Reid third. They were trailed in the top 10 by Emily Hyde, Joelle Romo, Lizzie Larkins, Lydia Youkey, Laurel Fiddler, Savannah Blide and Quinn Lehmkuhl.
Young Bjorn Halvorsen took the win in the youth 2K mass start race and was followed by Phoenix Sanchez, Koson Verkler, Kili Lehmkuhl and Caitlin Smith. Twenty-four racers participated in the 2K.
The annual Snowshoe Thompson Classic featured five races, with a men’s and women’s 10K, a men’s and women’s 5K, and a youth 2K.
Patrick McElravey raced to victory among 50 men in the 10K, posting a time of 33:11.5 to runner-up Eusden’s 33:54.0. Christian was third in 34:41.1.
They were trailed in the top 10 by Austin Meng, Wyatt Fereday, Millslagle, Carroll, Ryan Belisle, Casey Jobe and Trace Calvin.
In a field of only four women, former Olympian Beth Reid (38:48.6) took the win in the 10K ahead of Carolyn Tiernan (52:50.8) and Beth Thomas (53:19.9). Jenelle Webb was fourth.
Joanne Reid, a former national champion at the University of Colorado, won the girls’ 5K in a field of 39 racers, posting a time of 17:40.3. Hannah Halvorsen was second in 17:47.3, and Blackmer was third in 18:51.5.
Fiddler was fourth, followed by Hyde, Youkey, Ivy Spiegel Ostrom, Romo, Bria Riggs and Maya Seckenger.
Nineteen boys raced the 5K, with Sam Schoderbek winning in 18:32.2 and Haydn Halvorsen placing second in 18:44.3. James Clinton Schoonmaker was third in 18:47.1, followed by Damon Iraggi, Nate Cutler, Cooper Anderson, Christopher Miller, Ian Smith, Dawson Smith and David Dalicandro.
Natalie Lang-Ree won the youth 2K race among 20 competitors with a time of 6:34.1. Lexie Madigan was second in 6:37.8 and Aaron Bronstone was third in 6:39.7. Bodhi Kuzyk was fourth and Verkler fifth.
