Local athletes to compete in Tahoe Rim Trail 50K/50M/100M Endurance Runs

Last year, after winning his third consecutive 50-kilometer race in the annual Tahoe Rim Trail 50K/50M/100M Endurance Runs, Truckeeand#8217;s Peter Fain caught flak for not and#8220;stepping upand#8221; to a more grueling distance.

and#8220;(Race Director) David Cotter asked me afterward when I was going to step up and do the 50-miler,and#8221; Fain said after that 2009 run. and#8220;I keep chickening out because of the heat. I don’t like running in the heat.and#8221;

This year, Fain is and#8220;stepping upand#8221; to tackle a longer run. Heand#8217;s one of 162 ultrarunners registered for the 50-mile race. A total of 184 runners are listed on the 50K roster, while 117 are signed up for the 100-miler.

The runs start at 5 a.m. Saturday from Spooner Lake and#8212; elevation 7,000 feet and#8212; and end in the same location. According to the event website, the 50-mile and 100-mile courses were altered slightly. The change added about 1,800 feet of elevation gain and loss, bringing the total amount of gain/loss to just under 12,000 feet in the 50-miler and 24,000 feet in the 100-miler.

Cutoff time is 4 p.m. Sunday (35 hours) for the 100-mile run, 10:29 p.m. (16.29 hours) for the 50-mile run and 8 p.m. (14 hours) for the 50K.

Among the Truckee and North Tahoe ultrarunning contingent, Chris Luberecki, 43, of Tahoe City is slated to join Fain in the 50-mile run, while Julie Young of Truckee will defend her 50K title from a year ago. Truckeeand#8217;s Betsy Nye, who recently completed another Hardrock 100 Endurance Run in Colorado, and former Olympic biathlete Glenn Jobe of Sierraville are registered for the 50K, and Truckeeand#8217;s Gretchen Brugman will race the 100-miler.

Two-time defending champ Erik Skaden of Folsom will return to defend his 100-mile crown after winning last year with a time of 20 hours, 27 minutes, 32 seconds.
