The Psyche Senior Hip-Hop Dance Team brought home a first-place trophy from the UCA/UDA Six Flags Marine World Championship in Vallejo on Oct 21.

The team received a bid to UDA Dance National in Walt Disney World, Fla., in February.

Competing against teams of 20-plus dancers, the six-person team received a score of 95 points out of a possible 100.

“For the team’s first competition, you couldn’t ask for a better performance,” said Psyche Team head coach Teri McKinney. “The team was great.”

The judges score on formation, dance technique, overall crowd appeal, transitions, showmanship, body control and hip-hop tricks. The judges noted that the routine was exciting and full of energy and that the boy dancers were exceptional.

The Psyche Team members consist of three boy dancers and six girl dancers from Truckee, Reno and Incline Village. The team members who competed were Ali C., Aly R., Lauren W., Alyssa, Javier E. and Stefan. The team members competing in the next competition will be Jessica E., Becca N. and Gil C.

The Psyche Senior Hip-Hop Dance Team is an extension of the T-n-T Explosion, which offers many programs year-round. The program has been around for six years under the direction of McKinney, Darnell Carroll and Mareo Ponce.

In the past, T-n-T teams have made these notable achievments: 2006 JAMZ National All Star Cheerleading Champions, 2006 West Coast Cheerleading Champions, 2005 UDA Northern California Senior Hip-hop Champions and 2004 UCA National All Star Cheerleading Finalists.

The gym in which the teams practice offers dance technique in ballet, jazz and tap for ages 4-12 instructed by Sherrie and Kayla Peterson. It offers beginning/intermediate hip-hop dance for all ages instructed by Stefan, Darnell Carroll and Mareo Ponce. There is also non-competitive recreational cheer and dance for ages 5-13 and many tumbling classes ” pre-tumbling to level 3 and tumbling for ages 1-18 instructed by McKinney and Javier Espinoza.

The gym offers a competitive program in Elite All Star Cheer and Hip-hop dance. This program gets athletes and dancers ready for college programs or professional dance programs.

Competition programs offered include Elite Cheerleading Level 3 and junior, senior and adult hip-hop dance for ages 7 and older. Cheer and junior and adult hip-hop students can join year-round. The senior hip-hop team will be having audition in January for dancers with intermediate/advanced hip-hop technique for middle and high school students only.

The gym offers birthday parties and may be rented by groups to have team practices.
