Local mountain biker steps up

Truckee local Paul Zarubin captured his third first-place finish in a race at Snow summit near Big Bear Lake in Southern California two weeks ago.

This was Zarubin’s third fist place in the 50-and-up beginners cross-country division.

“I achieved a personal goal of mine. My national ranking is currently fourth place overall.”

This particular race was a part of the Norba National series, which consists of four races and then a final championship race.

“There were less people in this race, but the competition was tough. The climb was 2,000 feet with a 8,200-foot summit. It was a real lung burner,” said Zarubin. “The course was really tough. The downhill section was particularly nasty. There were a lot of roots and drops. At one point the course had a 1,500-foot decent in less than three miles. The course was 12 miles in all.”

“I really didn’t know how I would do at the National level. But since I’m three for three with wins, I’m going to move up to next class. The sport class will be more competition, but I’m looking forward to doing well.”
