Local swimmer makes waves at U.S. Masters

Truckee resident Brant Allen finished no worse than seventh place in six races he swam at the United States Masters short course Nationals May 11 through 14.

Held in Coral Springs, Fla., the U.S. Masters event is part of worldwide competitive swimming organization that promotes aquatics for adults ages 18 and older who compete outside of the college competitive circuit.

With the increased growth in the popularity of aquatics, the volume and caliber of competitors was extremely high. The fact that 55 individual records and four relay national records were smashed during this meet points to the depth of the field.

Brant, a sprint event specialist, took second in the 50 breast stroke, third in the 100 breast, third in the 100 freestyle, fourth in the 50 back and seventh in the 100 backstroke. The times dividing the top 10 finishers in each event came down to hundredths of seconds.

Last year Brant was one of 12 U.S. Masters swimmers invited to the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., where Brant worked out in state of the art facilities with world-class coaches and trainers.

In August Brant will be representing the U.S. at the Masters Worlds. Aquatic athletes from all over the world will be putting the hammer down at the Stanford University Aquatic Complex.
