Mark Wellman Celebrity Golf Challenge on Sept. 14-15

The fairways will be full of familiar faces golfing for a good cause in Truckee on the weekend of Sept. 14-15 when the Mark Wellman Celebrity Golf Challenge returns for a second year to raise money for Disabled Sports USA Far West and No Barriers USA.

The public is invited to a Meet the Celebrities reception on Thursday, Sept. 14 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at Old Greenwood Clubhouse in Truckee. Tickets are $45 and include live music, educational forum, silent auction, appetizers and Charbay Vodka martini bar. Soldiers wounded in the Iraqi war will be the special-honored guests.

The Celebrity Challenge Golf Tournament will be held Friday, Sept. 15 at Tahoe Donner Golf Course in Truckee. Sign-ups begin at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start at 10 a.m.

Tournament fees are $250 for individuals and $1,000 per foursome. An awards party and banquet will follow at The Lodge at Tahoe Donner.

Last year’s inaugural event raised more than $70,000. Funds raised go to programs dedicated to providing affordable, physical and recreational activities that build health and confidence for the physically disabled.

The event will also benefit No Barriers USA, a Northern California non-profit corporation that is dedicated to increasing active participation in the outdoors for people with disabilities.

Event producer Mark Wellman, of No Limits in Truckee, is a motivational speaker and acclaimed author and filmmaker.

Despite being paralyzed in a mountain climbing accident in 1982, Wellman returned to climbing and made history as the first paraplegic to ascend Yosemite’s El Capitan and Half Dome. Wellman is also a former member of the United States Disabled Ski Team and is known for his extreme downhill skiing and white-water kayaking adventures.
