Middle school triumphs

Sierra Mountain Middle School’s cross country skiers fared well last weekend at the State Championships, taking first place in both the girl’s and boy’s divisions.

This was the fourth year in a row that the girl’s team has emerged victorious from the championships and the fifth consecutive year for the boy’s team.

Eighth grader Joaquin Goodpaster led the pack of boys with a first place finish just ahead of teammate Matt Gelso who finished in second. Thomas Hill and Ben Kantz of Prosser Creek raced in for third and fourth place respectively, keeping their small team in the running.

The race turned out to be a family victory for the Goodpasters, as Joaquin’s sister Maisha raced to a first place in the girls pack. Gabrielle Joffe of Prosser Creek finished second, followed by Sarah Violett of Foothills in third position.
