Nordic skiing: Truckee’s Matt Gelso named to Under-23 Championships team
Truckee Nordic skier Matt Gelso, 20, was one of 11 athletes named to the U.S. Ski Team’s Under-23 Championships team this past week at the ConocoPhillips U.S. Cross Country Championships banquet near Anchorage, Alaska.
The young athletes will compete in various races throughout Europe during the next six weeks, with the Under-23 Cross Country Championships scheduled for Jan. 28 through Feb. 6 in Praz de Lys Sammand.
“This is an exciting talented group of young cross country skiers heading abroad to represent the United States,” said Nordic Program Director John Farra, also referring to the World Junior Championships and Scandinavian Cup teams, which were announced the same day. “They are the future of the sport and these championships are a great way to begin the process of grooming young athletes for the demands of racing against their international peers.”
In addition to his role with the U.S. Ski Team, Gelso skis for the University of Colorado at Boulder.
“He is arguably the most talented racer in the country,” Head Development Coach Matt Whitcomb says in Gelso’s U.S. Ski Team biography. “If Matt can learn to balance life at CU with the demands of racing at the elite level, he will find himself quickly among the best in the country, aimed directly towards a spot on the Olympic team in 2010.”
