North Lake Tahoe golf team takes third at state
After capturing the Class 2A Northern League championship, North Tahoe’s golf team traveled to Boulder City to compete in this year’s Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association State Boys Golf Championship.
The Lakers had a strong two days of play on the par-72, 6,134-yard Boulder City Golf Course with junior Murphy Scott finishing as state runner-up and North Tahoe claiming third overall as a team.
The players opened the tournament on Wednesday, May 16, on a course that, accordant to Coach Jim Smith, played more difficult than it appeared with tree-lined fairways.
Scott took early control of the tournament, shooting a 72 to hold a one-stroke lead over eventual tournament winner, The Meadows’ Kevin Inthachack.
Scott followed up his first round with a 75 the next day, but Inthachack fired a tournament-low 71 to win this year’s individual state championship by three strokes. Inthachack finished the tournament at an even-par 144, while Scott carded a 147.
The Lakers Connor Hipsley claimed a top-five finish, shooting a combined 157 to take fifth place. Hipsley shot a 76 on the second day, improving five strokes from his first round score. Hipsley’s day was highlighted by a chip in for eagle on the par-5, 16th hole. Incline’s Satchel Hirsh was next with a 161.
North Tahoe also had Hector Vera (195), Jake Inclan (199), Dominic Hatch (207), and Ben Hopswood (223) competing at the tournament.
“As first time coaches we were so proud to be a part of such a wonder full group of boys and how well their season went,” said Smith.
As a team the Lakers combined to shoot a 698 for third place. The Meadows won the team state title with a 73-over-par 649, followed by Lake Mead with a 684.
North Tahoe will graduate five of its six players later this spring.
“The golf season was dedicated to their late coach Steve Munro,” said the team’s other coach, Kevin Cose, in an email to the Sun. “They dominated the Northern League matches, but ran into (two) very tough southern division teams from Las Vegas … (we’d) also like to recognize coach Bump for all his hard work and dedication to the golf team over the years.”
