North Tahoe basketball: Lakers split openers at Loyalton
The North Tahoe girls didn’t waste any time getting in the win column.
Opening the season on the road, the Laker girls defeated Loyalton 50-36 in a nonleague game Tuesday night.
“This being the first game, I could tell that both teams were a little tentative and nervous,” said North Tahoe head coach Scott Conn. “There were multiple mistakes that tend to disappear late in the season.
“But for the most part I was happy with the girls’ effort.”
Shelby Adams led the Lakers in the scoring department with 15 points, while Kelly Hester had 14 points. Adams added 10 rebounds, two blocks and four steals, and Hester had seven assists, two blocks, three steals and five rebounds.
Shannon Stack, who played a “solid game defensively,” her coach said, grabbed nine rebounds and put in six points, while Brit Johnson had three steals, four rebounds and two assists and Sydney Courcier six rebounds and three steals.
Conn gave credit to a “pretty good” Loyalton team that limited North Tahoe on the offensive end.
“They played respectable defense, but their offense had a tough time getting going,” Conn said of Loyalton, which visits North Tahoe for a rematch on Tuesday.
“I’m very happy with the defense we played. I’m not really satisfied with the offense, despite scoring 50 points.”
The Lakers are scheduled to play in the highly competitive Marin Academy Invitational Tournament in the Bay Area from Thursday through Saturday.
“We’ve got nine more games to get the team firing on all cylinders,” Conn said, looking ahead to the Lakers’ league opener against Pershing County on Jan. 2.
