North Tahoe boys post win over Portola

The North Tahoe High boys basketball team broke into the win column on Monday with a 65-52 win over visiting Portola.

Head Laker coach David Hansen said he was working with only seven active players due to various reasons. Hansen also said that his players were starting to play up to their potential.

“My guys are really starting to respond,” Hansen said.

According to Hansen, the Lakers lead for the entire game. And a mix of man-to-man and zone defense was key in shutting down Portola’s offense.

Defending league MVP Michael Forte put down 35 points, and despite fouling out of the game on a technical, big man Kona Murray, who was in his first game of the season due to academic restrictions, still managed to post 10 points.

Also back again after completing Hansen’s mandatory number of practices was Spencer Marple, who Hansen said had a great performance.

Hansen also named Taylor Goode as having a stellar performance as well as junior Michele Basile, who Hansen said is a defensive maniac.

“He just has a nose for it,” Hansen said of Basile’s defensive prowess.

After suffering tough losses to South Tahoe and Truckee last week, a win over what Hansen called a very strong Portola team was a confidence builder.

“It was a good game for us,” Hansen said. “We needed a win.”
