North Tahoe boys’ soccer | Lakers drop non-league game against Placer

Sylas Wright/Sierra SunNorth Tahoe sophomore Riley McCarthy saves a Placer breakaway attempt as Zach Rickenbach trails the play during Tuesday's 2-0 loss.

TAHOE CITY and#8212; The Lakers battled back and forth in a scoreless tie for the better part of 80 minutes before Placer broke through with a pair of goals in the waning moments to earn a 2-0 nonleague win on Tuesday.

North Tahoe, which lost 4-0 to perennial power Jesuit (Calif.) last Saturday, fell to 0-3-1 overall after completing a challenging nonleague schedule against California opponents.

The Placer contest was evenly matched throughout, with neither team mounting many serious threats on goal. But with 5 minutes left in regulation, Placer senior Nick Mitchell delivered a devastating blow when he knocked a header past North Tahoe keeper Trevor Trimm off a corner kick.

Their spirits noticeably deflated, the Lakers allowed a final goal with mere seconds remaining when Dylan Day blasted a shot into the back of the net from about 25 yards out. Placer improved to 6-0-1 with the win.
