North Tahoe football: Another incredible day from Mercogliano paces Lakers

MCDERMITT, Nev. — There are impressive offensive displays, and then there’s what Thomas Mercogliano did Saturday.

The North Tahoe quarterback racked up 353 total yards, six touchdowns and five two-point conversions, leading the Lakers to a 58-8 throttling of McDermitt on Saturday at McDermitt High School.

The Lakers stormed out to a 38-0 halftime lead and never looked back.

Poised in the pocket, Mercogliano completed 9 of 12 passes for 115 yards and four touchdowns. The dual-threat QB also beat the Bulldogs with his legs, rushing for a team-high 174 yards on 10 carries — a staggering 17.4 yards per carry — with a touchdown.

If that wasn’t enough, Mercogliano added a 64-yard kickoff return touchdown.

The sophomore was a playmaker on defense, too, as he caused a fumble, made an interception and had two solo tackles.

The Lakers’ offense also got a boost from Nathan Lutz, who rushed for 62 yards and a touchdown on only five attempts.

In the passing game, Brett Hurt led the way with five catches for 44 yards and a touchdown. Raul Estrada, Dalton Lamberth and Eli Snyder each hauled in a TD.

Defensively, North Tahoe suffocated McDermitt, forcing the Bulldogs into five turnovers.

Lamberth was the anchor with nine tackles and a fumble recovery. Joe Pierce had six tackles and Ethan Eversit added five tackles.

Cooper Kohnen, Martin Barrera and Hurt each added a fumble recovery for the Lakers.

North Tahoe (3-3) looks to keep the pace Friday when it travels to Yerington for a 4:30 p.m. showdown.
