North Tahoe football hosts season opener Saturday
The North Tahoe football team is about to find out how well its preseason preparation paid off.
The Lakers hosts a nonleague game against the Biggs (Calif.) Wolverines on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Lakers head coach Scott Everist said the two schools have not squared off since the 1970s, if ever.
“They’re a small school just like us, so it should be a pretty competitive game, I hope,” Everist said. “We haven’t had a chance to see them, so we’re going in blind.”
Everist said his roster shrunk from 23 to 18 after recent two-a-day practices weeded out several players. But those who remain are geared to go.
“They’re ready to play. It’s the first game, so they’re hungry and excited,” the coach said.
Biggs finished 2-7 last season, when it had 28 players on its roster, according to maxpreps.com. Maxpreps has not received a current roster.
The Lakers, who will be led by junior Mitchell Conn at quarterback, will play without sophomore tight end/defensive back Jonathan Adams, who rolled an ankle in last weekend’s scrimmage against Truckee and Quincy.
Adams’ injury is the only one to report, said Everist, who expects to have the sophomore back in North Tahoe’s league opener against Hawthorne on Sept. 6.
