North Tahoe girls drown Mineral County

North Tahoe’s girls basketball team got a more accurate glimpse of where it stands against a team its size Tuesday night, and things are looking up.

The Lakers played their second game of the season against a 2A division school, and for the second time were victorious.

“It was nice to gauge where we are as a basketball team against a team of our size,” Conn said.

North Tahoe made fairly easy work of Mineral County, winning the non-league game 53-30.

With North Tahoe’s shrinking enrollment numbers, many Laker teams will make the tansition next season to the 2A, and that might not be a bad spot for the Lakers, Conn said.

“North Tahoe basketball is in a good place when we go down to 2A next year,” Conn said.

Conn also explained that on a team that has only won two league games out of eight, a victory like that is important.

“It made the kids understand that it’s not always them,” Conn said.

After scoring 17 points and only allowing nine in the first quarter, North Tahoe slacked a little bit in the second quarter.

“They just let down,” Conn said.

After watching his girls score only seven points to Mineral County’s nine in the second quarter, Conn said his halftime speech became more important.

“The kids really responded to the halftime speech,” he said.

In the third quarter the Lakers picked up their game ” especially on defense ” scoring 17 points and allowing only two.

“Our defense in particular was outstanding,” Conn said.

In the fourth quarter North Tahoe allowed things to even out more, scoring 12 to Mineral County’s 10.

North Tahoe was led by Kelly Hester, who tallied 19 points before fouling out with three minutes to play.

“Kelly Hester really had a whale of a game at the point guard position,” Conn said.

Hester was followed on the points board by Bridgette Kimmey, Joelle Lazzareschi and Brit Johnson, each of whom had seven points.

North Tahoe now has to jump back into league play, and it’s jumping right into the deep end.

The Lakers face Lowry, the second-place team in the Northern 3A at 7-1, Friday on Dollar Hill at 6 p.m. The following day the Lakers host Spring Creek, the No. 1 team in league with a perfect 8-0 record, at 2 p.m.
