North Tahoe girls soccer | Lakers open season 1-2 at Galena tournament

The Lakers went 1-2 in the season-opening Howell Memorial Tournament at Galena this past weekend, with both losses coming against 4A programs.

and#8220;The Galena tournament was a huge success for us,and#8221; said North Tahoe head coach Jon Rockwood. and#8220;We finished 1-2 but played well against much larger schools.and#8221;

North Tahoe started the annual tournament with a 3-1 loss to Reed, then followed with a 3-2 win against Fernley and a 2-0 loss to Spanish Springs.



and#8220;The girls came out strong and played well through the midfield,and#8221; Rockwood said of the Reed game. and#8220;We suffered a few, preventable defensive errors that have been addressed.and#8221;

Junior Sammi Schulte scored the Lakersand#8217; only goal on a breakaway towards the end of the second half.



The Fernley win was a seesaw battle, with the Lakers trailing by a goal before tying the score at 1-1, then going down 2-1, tying the score again, and finally taking the lead for good on a go-ahead goal by Emily Pieper assisted by Tenaya Driller. Schulte also scored on an assist from Nicole Younger, who added an unassisted goal in the win.

Spanish Springs, a bigger and faster team overall, Rockwood said, scored both goals in the first half before the Lakers played them to a 0-0 tie after the break.

and#8220;We need to work out a few kinks in the coming practices, but the season is looking great,and#8221; Rockwood said.

The Lakers begin their Northern 3A Sierra League season at Sparks on Sept. 9.
