North Tahoe golf: Griffith third in state after Day 1
GENOA, Nev. ” North Tahoe junior Alec Griffith is in third place after Day 1 of the 2A State Golf Championship at Genoa Lakes Course.
The two-day tournament started Tuesday and concludes Wednesday afternoon.
Competing individually along with sophomore teammate Travis Boerner, Griffith shot a 6-over 78 on the first day, trailing only Hawthorne’s Foster Kenton (75) and Whittell’s Michael Koskin (77).
Boerner posted an 89 on the first day.
Whittell took the early lead in the six-team tournament with a combined score of 421. Incline is in second with a score of 431, followed by Battle Mountain at 479.
“I’m actually a little surprised that we have the lead,” said Whittell coach Steve Maltase. “I thought Incline would jump out ahead of us. I feel good about coming home to Edgewood. I hope the kids can play the way they’ve been practice there.”
Pretournament favorite Justin Holets of Incline was unable to match his low round from regionals. The regional champ shot 81 to share Incline team honors with Thomas Annese.
