North Tahoe soccer: Boys fall to Incline in state semifinal

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. — One goal is all that separated the Lakers from the Division III state final.
The North Tahoe and Incline boys soccer teams battled to a scoreless stalemate through 73 minutes of Friday’s state semifinal at Incline.
With seven minutes remaining in regulation, however, Incline senior Rey Estrada headed a perfectly placed cross by freshman Michael Callejas into the Laker goal, sending the Highlanders to the state final with a 1-0 win.
Incline, the No. 2 seed in the tournament, went on to rout fourth-seeded Yerington 7-0 the next day to earn a fourth consecutive state championship. Yerington advanced by upsetting top-seeded West Wendover, 1-0, in two overtime periods Friday.
“I thought we played out hearts out,” said North Tahoe coach Beto Alcaraz, whose third-seeded Lakers split their two regular-season meetings with Incline. “We came out with intensity and talked about playing smart and applying pressure. But they got the one score, and that’s the way it goes.”
The Lakers, who will graduate seven seniors from this year’s team, posted a final league record of 9-3.
