North Tahoe volleyball: Five Lakers honored by league, Baumgardner voted Player of the Year

Tall as usual, the 2008 Lakers were not short on talent, either.Five North Tahoe volleyball players were recognized by Northern 2A coaches for their individual prowess on the court. One of them earned the highest honor available, as senior standout Kayla Baumgardner was voted Northern 2A Player of the Year for her instrumental role in helping lead the Lakers to a state championship berth. Baumgardner, who finished the season with 182 kills in 61 games, signed a national letter of intent to play at Division II Chico State in the fall.Joining Baumgardner on the All-League first team are senior teammates Kelly Hester and Arielle Younger, while Sydney Courcier made the second team and Ellie earned honorable mention recognition.Shauna Bake of Pershing County (Lovelock) was voted Northern 2A Coach of the Year.The Lakers finished 10-2 in league play and were the only 2A team to defeat state champion Whittell. North Tahoe downed Whittell in four games on Sept. 16.
