North Tahoe volleyball | Lakers host inaugural tournament

The Lakers hosted the inaugural North Tahoe Classic tournament on Friday and Saturday, where they faced three larger schools in Dixon (Calif.), Vintage (Calif.) and Sparks.

Although the Lakers dropped all three matches in straight sets, first-year coach Mike Welch said the young team showed marked improvement over its season-opening tournament the previous weekend.

Taylor Briggs was selected to the North Tahoe Classic Varsity All-Tournament Team, while Kelsey Colmenero was named to the North Tahoe Classic JV All-Tournament Team.

Welch said Briggs and setter Kylie Willson did a commendable job passing and providing leadership on defense. Baylee Goodwin led the Lakers in blocking, while freshman setter Tilley Gibeaut played with composure throughout the tournament, her coach said.

Freshmen Jordan Briggs and Helana Kearns also played well in the tourney and have earned starting positions, Welch said.

UP NEXT: The Lakers are scheduled to host Pershing County on Wednesday and travel to Quincy on Tuesday, Sept. 18.
