North Tahoe’s Nordic team untouchable at Mammoth Classic
Skiers from North Tahoe High School put on a dominant showing last Friday at Mammoth Lakes, sweeping first place in the team events at the Mammoth Classic cross-country race.
The Lakers also had the fastest individuals on the day, sweeping the girls’ podium and posting two of the three fastest times on the boys’ side.
North Tahoe’s Lily Murnane captured first place in the girls’ race, defeating a field of 29 skiers across 5 kilometers for the win with a time of 25 minutes, 22.3 seconds.
Teammate Kili Lehmkuhl was second with a time of 25.27.0, followed by the Lakers’ Alani Powell in third place with a time of 25.58.9. The team also had Mera Schoonmaker finish in seventh with a time of 28.33.6 as the North Tahoe girls rolled to the win with a low score of 13 points.
Mammoth was next with 31 points, followed by Truckee with 34 points.
Caitlin Smith led the Truckee girls with a time of 27.08.1 for fourth place. Truckee’s Kendall Kelly finished eighth with a time of 30:15.2, and Petra Kidd was 10th with a time of 30:44.4. Sonny Strusinski finished with a time of 33.40.0 for 12th place.
In boys’ racing, Cooper Anderson finished more than eight seconds ahead of the nearest competitor in the field of 43 racers.
Anderson crossed the finish line with a time of 22.28.7, and was followed across by Truckee’s Steffen Cuneo.
North Tahoe’s Phoenix Sanchez was third with a time of 22.39.9. The Lakers’ Max Roske was fifth with a time of 23.13.8, followed by teammates Cooper Honeywell (24.06.3), Jake Hacker (24:06.3) and Koson Verkler (24:19.7).
The Lakers finished with a low score of 15 points to take the team win. Truckee was second with 35 points.
KC Larkins (24:22.1) finished in ninth for the Wolverines, Matt Seline (24:32.8) was 10th and Calin Laine (26:34.3) was 14th.
High school racing in the California Nevada Interscholastic Ski and Snow Federation will continue on Friday with the North Tahoe freestyle. High school skiers are scheduled to take off for the 5-kilometer mass start at 10:30 a.m.
