Players enjoyed the mountain tennis setting at Northstar for the 35th annual Northstar Open tennis tournament last weekend.
Players came from Reno, Carson City, Sacramento, San Francisco, Chicago, Spain, France, Europe and of course, locally from the Tahoe Basin north and south. The weather brought perfect conditions for an all-out slugfest. Prize money and ski/golf/lodging vacation packages were awarded to the winners and finalists.
Highlights included locals pros Zeke Straw and Wade Holiday regaining their title, defeating a Division I college team from Chicago, and Malcolm Ridenour fighting his way to a final berth in the Menand#8217;s A Singles.
Reno pro Jani Tilikainen defended his singles and doubles titles comfortably. Beth Gebhardt from Tahoe City captured the womenand#8217;s B Singles over Northstar resident Gyongyi Benedek. Claire Perry and Carol Zwick of Incline and longtime Northstar residents battled to a three-set finals, succumbing to the Reno team of Bradford and Kip.
