Northstar will host inaugural Big Blue winter adventure race

The first annual Big Blue Winter Adventure Race takes place at Northstar-at-Tahoe on January 9th, 2005.Modeled after the extremely successful summer series, the Big Blue Winter Adventure Race is a multi-sport event in which teams participate and compete in activities including: Free Heel skiing or Randonee, Snow shoeing, Orienteering and Map & Compass skills.The race is designed so that participating teams usually finish within 4 to 7 hours. The course challenges seasoned racers, but also offers those new to the sport the opportunity to experience and compete in adventure racing.Northstar-at-Tahoe, the location of the Big Blue Winter Adventure Race, plans to open up new backcountry for the event. Teams will be required to race through various terrain and check-in at several points throughout the course. The order in which the teams chose to complete the check-points is one of the key factors in determining their success. Adventure racing is not only a physical sport, but requires mental planning and strategizing. Topographical maps, compass work and navigational skills play an important part.Resort employees, ski patrol members and local ski/outdoor shop employees are encouraged to enter. A portion of their entry fees will go toward an area non-profit cause.Participants can race in teams of two. The teams may be co-ed or same sex. The entry fee is $180. A cash purse will be dispersed among the top placing teams.
