Charles “Chuck” M. Ashbaugh
May 25, 1961 – Oct. 22, 2011
Charles “Chuck” M. Ashbaugh, born May 25, 1961 in Idaho Falls, Idaho, passed away on Oct. 22, 2011. He is survived by his mother Francis Jaynes of Sequim, Wash.; his father, Ivan Ashbaugh of Santa Ana; and his two daughters Melisa Lyn Ashbaugh of Santa Barbara, and Emily Allison Ashbaugh of Tahoe City.
Chuck spent the majority of his adult life living in Tahoe City after moving to North Lake Tahoe shortly after graduating from high school in Huntington Beach, Calif., in 1979. An avid outdoorsman, Chuck is best remembered for his days serving as a professional ski patroller at both Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows. He also served as a volunteer firefighter in the North Lake Tahoe Fire Department. Chuck was known for his calm demeanor in crisis situations and a masterful ability to assess situations quickly and professionally. He risked his life more than once searching in snowstorms for lost victims at the ski areas long after the resorts had closed.
In addition to skiing, Chuck enjoyed rock climbing and surfing and was known in those communities as a gifted athlete. He also enjoyed playing guitar and never turned down the opportunity to play music with friends.
He enjoyed parenthood, and was very proud of his two grown daughters.
A memorial service celebrating Chuck’s life is planned for Sunday, Dec. 18 at noon at the North Lake Tahoe Conference Center in Kings Beach.
In lieu of flowers, donations are being accepted to fund a firefighter training scholarship that is in the process of being created in Chuck’s name at a local bank. Details will be provided at the service.
