Outdoorsmen to offer the know-how at upcoming shows

January can generally be counted on for winter weather and the kick-off of the annual sports shows. The International Sportsmen’s Expositions begin their California run in San Mateo Jan. 12-16 at the San Mateo County Exposition Center, and in Sacramento Jan. 19-22 at Cal Expo’s California State Fairgrounds. The San Mateo show has changed its date this year to a much earlier date. Typically, San Mateo was well after the Sacramento show and this week it is a week ahead of it.

Admission to the show will cost you $12 and, typically, a parking fee per car. Children 12 and younger are free. At San Mateo the charge for parking is $7 per car. I’m not sure what it is at Cal Expo, but I know we typically have to pay for parking. You can buy your tickets at the show or order them online at http://www.sportsexpos.com. A complete listing of the daily show times are also on the site. Times vary, but weekdays usually have shorter shows.

Whatever your outdoor interest, you can find something at these shows. The shows contains everything from boats and RVs to camping, hunting, fishing and more. They even have a pretty extensive youth program sponsored by Western Outdoor News.

For those housebound anglers wanting to catch up on the latest in this year’s equipment, or to get tips from the people in the know, this show can provide quite a bit of information.

With fly fishing having gained popularity in our area and all over the country, the Exposition’s have made this segment quite interesting for the fly angler. Big names in the industry have always been present to conduct seminars and to demonstrate their skills at the Video Fly Tying Theater.

Many of these anglers have fished all over the world and are more than willing to share their experiences with you to help you become a better angler. As a result, these shows are great to gain lots of information.

The information is not just limited to your actual fishing skills. You will find a wealth of information on future destinations you may have wanted to fish. There are lots of outfitters and fishing areas represented at the show. If you have the urge to travel for some outstanding fishing, these folks will help you plan that trip of a lifetime.

Some of the big names at the San Mateo show include Barry Beck, Gary Borger, Jack Dennis, Mike Lawson, Brian O’Keefe and Denny Rickards. At the Sacramento show, Dennis and Rickards will be joined by others, including Ken Hanley and Jay Murakoshi.

Lots of fly tiers are also included at both shows. For a complete schedule and additional information on both of these shows, go to the aforementioned Web site. You can even view the complete list of exhibitors for each of these shows, along with a map of each site.

Many of the leading equipment companies are usually at these shows, so anglers have the opportunity to actually test some of the equipment. Casting the latest technology fly rods is always a fun thing to do at these shows. You can even get some help on your casting!

All in all, whatever form of fishing interests you, the International Sportsmen’s Expositions provides an excellent source of information on just about any species of fish and their method of take. Take a look at the complete listing of presentations and seminars on the Web site and plan your trip to see those who are of interest to you.
