Pop Warner football season under way

The Sagebrush Pop Warner football league, consisting of teams from Reno, Sparks, Carson, Tahoe and Truckee, began play in early August in Sparks.

Truckee had the largest turnout in its history with 115 kids, ages 8-15 years, trying out for four teams.

With the largest Pop Warner teams ever in Truckee, standouts include Jimmy Williams at fullback, Jeff Murphy at tight end, Mike Acuff at defensive end and Marcus Waters at defensive end, according to coach Bob Home.

The Sagebrush Jamboree was a controlled scrimmage where each team played four opposing teams for 10 minutes on offense and 10 minutes on defense.

Truckee’s Junior Midgets opened against Sparks, North Tahoe, Carson City and South Tahoe.

“The boys played well, running and passing the ball well on offense,” said Home. “And the defense held Sparks, North Tahoe and Carson City scoreless and only to a few yards.”

The midgets allowed a single touchdown, against the South Tahoe squad.
