Prep alpine skiing | Monforte, Driller lead Lakers in opening race

The Lakers are off to a solid start to their 2010-11 ski season.Led individually by Tenaya Drillerandamp;#8217;s third-place finish and Sal Monforteandamp;#8217;s win, North Tahoeandamp;#8217;s girls captured first place while the boys finished second in the season-opening Tahoe Basin League race at Alpine Meadows on Friday. The Lakers were second to South Tahoe overall (boys and girls combined).Monforte raced to a top finish in the boysandamp;#8217; race, a giant slalom, with a combined time of 55.52 seconds on the short course, outdistancing runner-up Michael Suglian of South Tahoe (56.17).Driller finished third in the girlsandamp;#8217; field with a combined time of 1:00.20. She trailed only Grace Dolan of Incline, who won in 58.80, and Morganne Murphy of Truckee, who was second in 59.26. Led by Murphy, the Wolverines finished second to the Lakers by a single point in the girlsandamp;#8217; race.Girlsandamp;#8217; team scores were North Tahoe 197, Truckee 196, South Tahoe 182, Incline 170, Whittell 120, Carson 84 and Douglas 74.South Tahoe won the boysandamp;#8217; team competition and the overall, as its boys posted a score of 209 points to runner-up North Tahoeandamp;#8217;s 192. Truckeeandamp;#8217;s boys were third at 182, followed by Whittell at 149, Douglas 122, Incline 112 and Carson 84.Overall team scores were South Tahoe 391, North Tahoe 389, Truckee 378, Incline 282, Whittell 269, Douglas 196 and Carson 168.Individually in the girlsandamp;#8217; competition, the Lakersandamp;#8217; Maddie Johnson placed fifth overall with a time of 1:00.90 and was followed by teammates Bozhie Pokorny (11th, 1:04.66), Tannyr Pasvantis (12th, 1:05.10) and Sydney Lancaster (17th, 1:09.84). For Truckee, Murphy was second while Ali Gerrard finished seventh in 1:01.63, Hailey Perkins was eighth in 1:03.45, Whitney Reed 15th (1:08.00) and Hilary Breuner 20th (1:13.17).On the boysandamp;#8217; side, North Tahoe senior Zach Rickenbach finished sixth overall and second among his Laker teammates with a time of 58.09 seconds. After Monforte and Rickenbach were Nico Monforte in 12th (1:00.37), Ryan Faye in 17th (1:03.41), Daniel Longo in 19th (1:04.45) and ALex Bourriague in 20th (1:05.13). Truckeeandamp;#8217;s boysandamp;#8217; results did not include full names.
