Prep Nordic racing: Heapes, Deurlington win varsity races at Royal Gorge Freestyle

North Tahoes Miles Heapes and Truckees Annika Deurlington captured the top spots in the varsity competition of the Royal Gorge Freestyle this past Friday.Under bright blue skies, the high school racers skate-skied two laps on a 3-kilometer course that wound down through the forest and back up to the Royal Gorge Summit Station.Adam Wright of Truckee trailed Heapes in the varsity boys race and was followed by Tom McElravey of North Tahoe rounding out the podium in third and Drew Deurlington of Truckee a close fourth. In the varsity girls race, Kathi Kirkeby of Mammoth took second and Michelle Cahill of North Tahoe took third. Cahill was followed by Laker teammates Sage Clark in fourth, Nicole Ramm in fifth, Maiya Greenwood seventh and Julia Levy eighth. Truckees Robyn Bath-Rosenfeld took sixth.Carson Clark led the Lakers with a first-place finish in the Open race, while on the girls side, Shelby Foster led the Laker girls in third place.In the middle school competition, Alder Creek boys took the top five spots, with Alex Kopytko leading the way in first. Katrin Larusson of Alder Creek won the girls race.
