High school and middle school Nordic skiers endured wet snowfall that turned to heavy rain in the Truckee Sprints on Friday — despite the race being moved from Truckee’s Surprise Stadium to a higher elevation at Tahoe Donner Cross Country.
The fan-friendly event began with preliminary time trials on a dynamic course with sharp turns, rollers and a fast finish stretch. The top 36 racers advanced to a head-to-head format of six-person heats. From there the top two finishers of each heat advanced to two semifinals. The top three finishers of both semifinal heats advanced to the final round.
In the high school races, Kiana Mullings of the Sugar Bowl Academy and North Tahoe’s Dylan Syben claimed victories in their respective finals.
Mullings, who posted the third-fastest time in the trials, was trailed by trials leader Lizzie Larkins of Truckee and North Tahoe’s Quinn Lehmkuhl. Syben topped the field in both the trials and final heat and was followed by North Tahoe teammates JC Schoonmaker and Julien Bordes.
After recording the fastest time in the trials, Sugar Bowl Academy’s Lexie Madigan won the girls middle school final, while Britta Winans of Alder Creek was second and Nina Seemann of North Tahoe rounded out the top three.
North Tahoe’s Nick Burkhart won both the trials and the final heat in middle school boys racing. Bjorn Halvorsen of Alder Creek finished runner-up and Spencer Thomas of Bishop was third.
Two races remain before the CNISSF State Championships on Feb. 27 — the Mammoth Classic on Feb. 5 and the North Tahoe Pursuit on Feb. 12. Go to the Far West Nordic website for complete results from the Truckee Sprints. A photo gallery is available by MacBeth Graphics.
