Prep snowboarding: Laker girls win season-opener at Northstar

The North Tahoe girls snowboard team raced to a top finish in the season-opening CNISSF race at Northstar-at-Tahoe on Monday.

In a field of 54 girls in the giant slalom race, the Lakers’ Tara Turpin and Emily Ashbaugh placed third and fourth, respectively, while Jamie Gross finished eighth, Taylor Lewis 11th, Lexi Schumann 14th and Kara Horn 15th.

In both the overall and#8212; boys and girls combined and#8212; and on the boys’ side, North Tahoe finished second behind Colfax, which posted a winning score of 517 to North Tahoe’s 497.

Out of 64 racers, Ben Reilly led the Laker boys in fifth place and was followed by teammates Griffin Lancaster in seventh, Clayton Doyle in 13th and Luke Funicella in 20th.

For the Wolverines, Ruby Wood finished fifth and Shauna Day 19th for the girls, while Ryan Cowie placed 10th to record the Truckee boys’ only top-20 finish.

The Lakers’ performance to open the season was enough to impress head coach Mort Nyberg, who also warned of a well balanced and competitive Central II Snowboard Division.

and#8220;This team has the most depth of any previous team,and#8221; Nyberg said of his Lakers. and#8220;However, our division is the toughest of the six divisions in the state, and almost any of the other six teams in our division could knock us off. This is going to be an exciting season.and#8221;

North Tahoe boasts a large team this year, with 10 varsity girls, 10 varsity boys and four open division, (junior varsity) boys. The Lakers and Wolverines compete against five other teams from California: Colfax, Placer, Davis, Nevada Union and Bear River.

Racers have to place in the top 21 in two GS and/or two slalom events to qualify for the state championship at Shasta, where they’ll face 34 other schools from across California.
