Prep snowboarding: Lakers carve to runner-up finish

The defending state champion Lakers finished second behind Colfax in a CNISSF slalom race at Alpine Meadows on Monday.

North Tahoe tallied 369 points between its boys and girls squads, while Colfax took the top spot with 382 points.

Placer (340 points) came in third and was followed by Davis (338), Nevada Union (252), Bear River (217) and Truckee (194), which competed without its top female racer, senior Kristen Harvey.

The Laker girls posted a high score of 209 points to the Colfax girls’ 203, thanks to a one-two finish from Jenna Burnside and Tara Turpin, as well as four other girls who cracked the top-20. Kelley Holman finished sixth, Jamie Gross 10th, Lexi Schumann 12th and Emily Ashbaugh 17th.

Ariah Curtis led the Truckee girls in 21st place.

In the boys’ competition, Truckee’s Kevin Cowie finished second behind Danny Kern of Colfax, while North Tahoe’s Nate Horn was third and teammate Clayton Doyle ninth and Truckee’s Sean Lefrak 10th.

After two races, Colfax leads the season standings with 757 points. North Tahoe is second with 726 points, followed by Placer with 697. The Wolverines are in fifth place overall with 460 points.
