The Truckee High swim team is set to compete in the Northern 4A Regional Meet after a strong showing in the Sierra League Championships this past weekend.

The Wolverines have been led in large part by junior Arek O’Connell, who will take his No. 1 ranking in the 50 free and a No. 3 ranking in the 100 free to regionals in hopes of qualifying for the State Championship.

“He is set for a good swim at Zones this weekend,” said Vicky Dewey, Truckee’s head coach.

Competing against teams from Wooster, Damonte Ranch, Hug, Incline and Sparks on Saturday, O’Connell won the 50 free with a time of 22.7.

Truckee junior Teague Mason placed second in the 100 fly with a time of 1:02.43, breaking his personal-best time of a 1:07.6 by more than five seconds.

Sophomore Michelle Hoehn also swam a strong 100 backstroke, taking second with a time of 1:12.66 and bettering her old time by three seconds.

Freshman Sophie Aaron took first in both the 50 free with a personal-best time of 27.59 and the 100 with a personal-best of 1:02.03.

Overall, the Truckee girls placed third and the boys fourth.

“Most of the kids will be tapering this week for Zones,” Dewey said. “They have all done a terrific job.”
