Preparing for Optimist All-Star Classic

Coaches have been selected, and now they are choosing seniors to play either basketball or softball later this month in a fundraiser for the Fallon Optimist Club.

The annual Fallon Optimist All-Star Classic features two events for graduating seniors to showcase their talents for one last time before embarking on their postsecondary ventures.

Scott Meihack, one of the founders and organizers of the all-star games, said the All-Star Classic basketball games between the Silver and Blue teams take place on May 22, while the all-star softball game is scheduled for May 24.

“We have the coaches, now they are beginning to fill their teams,” Meihack said.

Players are selected by the coaches. Seniors who played either girls or boys varsity basketball in Northern Nevada are eligible. Senior girls can be selected to play softball.

Meihack said players selected to the teams are individuals who started for their respective teams or saw significant action.

Girls basketball coaches are Dorey Thom of Yerington and Meggan Cranmer of McQueen. Thom, who guided the Lions to a successful season in the Northern 3A, will coach the Blue team, and Cranmer has the task of coaching the Silver team.

Coaching the boys teams are Brian Voyles of Hug (Silver) and Rob Streeter of Douglas (Blue).

Softball coaches will be Fallon’s Bill Archer and Carson City’s Scott Vickery.

If local coaches know of any deserving senior who made solid contributions to his or her team, they should call Meihack at (775) 423-3159.
