Regional tennis: Wolverines claim Northern DI-A crowns

The Truckee girls and boys tennis teams claimed titles at the Division I-A Northern Region Team Championships last week.

North Tahoe’s boys and Incline’s girls also competed, with the girls advancing to the finals before falling to Truckee, while Incline’s boys forfeited their semifinal round against South Tahoe.

In girls competition, Truckee (7-2) opened with a thrilling win over Fallon (6-3) by a score of 10-8 in the semifinal. The Wolverines then defeated Incline (11-7) by a count of 13-5 in the final.

The Truckee (10-0) and North Tahoe (4-6) boys squared off in the semifinal. The Wolverines came out on top, 15-3, before defeating South Tahoe (8-2) by a score of 12-6 in the final.

In the Truckee-North Tahoe matchup, Truckee’s No. 1 singles player, Zach Haas, defeated North Tahoe’s Mason Wittels, 6-2, in the first round. The No. 2 singles pitted Truckee’s Turner Drummond against North Tahoe’s Rudi Arntson, who came out on top, 6-3. Truckee’s Zach Yamauchi defeated North Tahoe’s Murphy Scott, 6-2, in a battle of No. 3 singles.

The Wolverines won all three doubles matches in the first round — Kevin Cross/Colin Deurlington, 6-0, over Emma Appleton/Nick Feige, Jack Feick/Noah Warren, 6-1, over Kacy Wright/Aidan Anderson, and Quincy Schram/Zach Larson, 6-0, over Noah Gaffney/Mason Schmidt.

In the second round, Wittels defeated Yamauchi, 6-1, for the Lakers’ one win in the round. Haas defeated Arntson, 6-1, and Gotts defeated Scott, 6-0. All three Truckee doubles won — Cross/Deurlington, 6-1, over Wright/Anderson, Feick/Watters, 6-0, over Dillon Hudson/Josh Ostrie, and Schram/Larson, 6-2, over Appleton/Feige.

North Tahoe also took one match in the third round, with Wittels defeating Gotts, 6-3. Hass defeated Scott, 6-0, and Yamauchi defeated Arntson, 6-3. Truckee took all three doubles matches — Grayson Beckert/Jack Keith, 6-2, over Luk Taylor/ V. Munoz, Feick/Warren, 7-6, in a tightly contested match over Appleton/Feige, and Schram/Larson, 6-2, over Wright/Anderson.
