John Lahti of Tahoe City won two silver medals in Alpine skiing at the Special Olympics of Northern California & Nevada, which was held at Heavenly Ski Resort from Feb. 12-13.Placing second in both slalom and giant slalom at the regional competition, Lahti, a member of Team Tahoe, earned an invitation to compete in the SONC Winter Games at Kirkwood Ski Resort from March 12-15.I was so proud and excited about that, the 2001 North Tahoe High grad said of his performance. Personally, I just did my best and smiled when I was done.Lahti, 24, who was among the 41 skiers and 18 snowboarders who competed at Heavenly, was not the only athlete from Team Tahoe who brought home hardware from the event. In fact, the seven athletes who represented Team Tahoe collected a total of 14 medals in their respective divisions five first-place, seven second- place and two fourth-place.I am proud to be a participant and met some great people, said the 6-foot-5, 240-pound Lahti. I definitely look forward to it next year.Lahti also works at Safeway in Tahoe City and attends classes at Choices Transitional Services in Truckee.
