Resorts opening one run at a time

BAY KELLEY, Sierra Sun

It’s a plodding sort of process – mother nature isn’t helping that much – but the resorts are opening run by run.

The areas that have made the most progress are Soda Springs and Boreal Mountain Playground. Both resorts claim to have a 100-percent of their terrain open.

Northstar-at-Tahoe is the first resort to open a halfpipe. Additionally, Northstar has four chairs and its gondola open, accessing about 17 trails.

Sugar Bowl, celebrating its 60th (diamond) anniversary this season (making it the oldest resort in the area), has all its lifts open except for Meadow and the Crow’s Nest. The lifts access about 1,500 vertical feet of skiing and boarding terrain.

Donner Ski Ranch, Sugar Bowl’s neighbor up on Donner Summit, is running at about 80 percent. It has five of its six lifts in operation and boasts having a 9- to 20-inch cover of snow.

Tahoe Donner is only open on the weekends and has three runs open; the Race Course, the Mile Run and the Snow Bird. The runs are for beginner and intermediate skiers and boarders.

Alpine Meadows is running the Summit, Roundhouse, Kangaroo, Scott, Hot Wheels, Meadow, Subway and Yellow lifts, accessing about 60 percent of its runs.

Squaw Valley has five lifts open at the bottom of the mountain and seven open at the top. None of the black diamond runs are open yet, but the area has plenty of challenging terrain.
