Roberts takes Oregon position

JAMES BALL, Sierra Sun

After five successful seasons and three consecutive state championships, Tahoe-Truckee High School girls’ soccer coach Doug Roberts is leaving.

He was recently named head coach of Salem, Ore.’s Western Baptist College Warrior soccer team, where Roberts is a former player.

A 1984 graduate of Western, Roberts replaces Tony Vandermeer, who resigned in December.

Roberts, 37, played for the Warriors from 1979-81 and later returned after a leg injury.

Twice, he was named an all-conference midfielder.

At Truckee, Roberts has led the team to 113 victories, three losses and two ties.

The team most recently won the 3A state title against Incline under Roberts’ direction.

With Roberts as coach, Truckee outscored opponents 653-63.

“We’ve found the guy to make our men’s program take another positive turn toward becoming a premier NAIA soccer team,” said Western Athletic Director Tim Hills.

Prior experience

Roberts was previously assistant varsity and head junior varsity coach at George Fox College in Newberg, Ore., in 1985-86.

“I’ve been smiling all week as my family and I are beginning to make plans to move and rejoin our college family there,” Roberts said. “I’m a very passionate coach and I want an aggressive style played on the field by our players. Yet, I want to develop positive relationships with them, too, because, even as the coach, I don’t always have the right answers. So, I listen well.”
