The largest cross-country resort in North America — Royal Gorge on Donner Summit — hosted two big Nordic races the weekend of March 19-20.

Athletes traveled from across the country to compete in the National Masters 10K Classic on Saturday. Many of those racers also competed the next day in the historic California Gold Rush, which doubled as the National Masters Distance event.

The Gold Rush featured three racing distances — the 45-kilometer main event, the Gold Rush, as well as the 30K Silver Rush and the 15K Bronze Rush.

While the event drew many racers from out of the area, the local Far West Nordic contingent more than held its own in a field of 67 racers in the Gold Rush.

Reno’s Wyatt Fereday, winner of the 2016 Great Ski Race, claimed the win and was followed by JC Schoonmaker of Tahoe City and Tav Streit of Truckee.

Beth Reid of Palo Alto earned the women’s Gold Rush victory and was 11th overall. Christina Mishica of Soda Springs and Jennifer Santoro of Cottonwood Heights, Utah, were second and third among women, respectively.

A total of 42 people raced the Silver Rush, with Christopher Miller taking the overall win and Truckee’s Audrey Staples topping the women’s field.

Thirty-four people raced the Bronze Rush, with Ryland Belisle winning the overall and Nina Seemann placing first among women and third overall.

In the National Masters 10K Classic, Barry Makarewicz of Salt Lake City raced to victory in a field of 54 athletes. Bill Nurge of Ketchum, Idaho, was second and Matthew Sanford of Reno was third.

Reid, a former Olympian, placed first in the women’s field and fifth overall and was followed by Kelly Milligan of Park City, Utah, in second and Gabriele Anderson of Sun Valley, Idaho, in third.
