Senior captain inspired Truckee softball

As the only senior on the 2004 Truckee High School softball team, Amber Harder stayed positive in a challenging situation.

On a team consisting of three juniors and the rest sophomores and freshman, Harder knew as team captain she had to provide a positive example for her teammates.

“It’s a lot of pressure being the only senior on the team,” Harder said after her team had been eliminated in the 3A Northern League Tournament by Bishop Manogue on May 15. “You carry the team a lot and you have to be up all the time. If you ever get down, it’s like a virus that runs through the whole team.”

For anyone who watched a Truckee softball game, by carrying the team Harder means emotionally. During the Manogue series, when the Truckee defense was struggling, it was Harder that would call a team meeting between innings and give a motivational speech.

Harder’s pep talks could not rally her squad past No. 1 seed Manogue, where Truckee was swept by scores of 9-2 and 8-7, but Truckee did mount a seventh inning comeback to get within one after being down 8-4 to start the inning.

“Usually we don’t start off with a lot of energy,” she said. “We usually do in the end; that’s how we do it. I’m proud of our team. I love them.”

Harder went 2 for 7 in the Manogue series and scored three runs. She said she is being recruited by Shasta College to play softball next season.

The senior was Truckee’s regular shortstop and also pitched occasionally.

In 2004, Harder led Truckee in runs scored with 27, hit .308, had two doubles, hit one of the team’s two home runs, stole eight bases and only struck out eight times in over 80 at-bats.
