Sertoma Classic: Date set for annual all-star football game

Sun Staff reports

Sparks Sertoma announced that the 2009 Sertoma Classic All-Star football game will be played at Reno’s Mackay Stadium on Friday, June 19 starting at 7:30 p.m.

The 28th annual event includes 100 of the top 2A, 3A and 4A graduating seniors ” 50 players per team ” from 33 schools throughout Northern Nevada and the Tahoe area, including Truckee and North Tahoe.

Player selections have not been announced. Last year three players from Truckee and North Tahoe played on the Silver team ” Truckee’s Nick Tennant and J.D. Wright and North Tahoe’s Joe Erman.

In 2004 the team selection process was changed from geographic boundaries to an alternating selction, or “draft” of schools, by the two head coaches. The changes help keep both sides relatively equal in size of schools and player talent.

Head coaches this year are Rick Walker of Dayton and Jeff Knutson of Fernley.

The Sertoma Classic is an all-volunteer fundraising event sponsored by the Sparks Sertoma Club. All proceeds are donated back to the community through local charities, while funds also are donated to academic and extra-curricular activities of participating high schools.
