Sierra College ski team needs donations
The Sierra College Ski Team is once again asking for the community’s assistance. The ski team was cut from the college budget in 2003 due to state cutbacks.
The community and Auburn Ski Club enabled the team to compete in the 2003-2004 ski season, and the results were extraordinary. The community-backed ski team blew away the competition earning another state championship as well as an astounding fourth place finish at the US National Championships in Sugarloaf, Maine.
Truckee local and two-time All-American Ahren Renner placed third at the national championships, leading the team to another successful season. Without the support from the community, we would not have been able to field a team. Once again, the college cannot fund this successful team and therefore it needs the community’s support.
The Sierra College Ski Team has a legacy dating back to the 1930s. Throughout the 70-year history, Sierra College skiers have successfully competed against Division I four-year universities both regionally and on the national playing field.
As a team, we provide athletes with unique opportunities to continue ski racing and pursue a college education. Many of the ski team’s past athletes have made great accomplishments academically as well as athletically. We have had many past racers go onto universities based on academic and/or athletic scholarships. Without the ski team as a stepping stone many have said they would not have attended college. With the opportunities the team has provided, they have become successful students as well as members of society.
Sierra College has expanded its facilities and is offering more classes and opportunities in the Truckee/North Tahoe area. This allows many local students to continue their education as well as fulfill their dreams of ski racing. The ski team teaches the students self discipline, responsibility and a work ethic that will lead them to success throughout their lives. Without raising the necessary funds, all the provisions and opportunities previously given to local racers will be gone.
In order to be considered a team, Sierra College is requiring the necessary funds be raised by Aug. 13. We are asking alumni, personal parties, businesses, ski associations and community foundations to help keep the team and the opportunities alive. Any amount will be gladly appreciated.
Donations are tax deductible and can be sent to Sierra College Ski Team, c/o Ryan Rodarte, P.O. Box 8541, Truckee, CA 96162.
