SODA SPRINGS, Calif. and#8212; Racers from 15 different countries, including Switzerland, Germany, Canada, Russia and Finland, are in the Tahoe area this week competing in the Ski Orienteering World Cup.

It is the first time this event, popular in northern Europe, has been held in the United States. The orienteers navigated their way, skate skiing on and off the groomed trails, to reach different points indicated on their maps.

The snow came just in time for the race. Royal Gorge opened about a week ago and the 24-inch base of compacted snow made for ideal skiing conditions. Despite the total accumulation for the season, racers and recreational skiers alike praised the conditions.

and#8220;The skiers really enjoyed the terrain. They are already asking about coming back to Royal Gorge next year,and#8221; said Brenda Giese, event director and Tahoe local.

The race at Royal Gorge was a North American Championship, which meant only U.S. and Canadian teams were eligible to metal in Tuesday’s race. American Alison Crocker finished first for the women and Nikolay Nachev took the gold for the men.

The race series continues at Tahoe XC and Auburn Ski Club throughout the week.
