Skiers rush for gold, find cold

Sierra Sun Staff

More than 300 cross-country skiers braved the rain Sunday, March 22, to compete in the 18th Gold Rush at Royal Gorge.

In the 50 kilometer Gold Rush event, Olympic skiers Justin Wadsworth and Laura McCabe were not slowed by the weather.

Wadsworth, from Bend, Ore., finished strong in 2:02.00, nine and a half minutes ahead of Michael Moffett.

McCabe finished first in the women’s division in a time of 2:27.00.

Winners received a one ounce gold coin donated by Salomon.

Fresh off successful trips to the Junior Olympics in Idaho, Truckee’s brother and sister team of Tom and Jenny Rassuchine won the men’s and women’s 15k event, respectively.

Truckee’s Kara Lapoint and Betsy VanBlarigan cane in second and third, respectively, in the 4k junior race, just ahead of the first boy finisher, Doug Coombs.

Karen Radebold took first and Debbie Hakkanson second in the women’s 30k event. Both women are from Truckee.

Radebold remembers the day as “cold and rainy.”

“It was a brutal race,” said Radebold. “I got hypothermia and a sore throat. The only reason I finished is because I was in first place.”

Radebold said it was probably the most difficult race of the season. She commended Royal Gorge on its grooming and Tahoe Donner for its training facilities.

All money received in entries,T-shirt sales and BBQ tickets was donated to support the development of junior cross-country skiers in the area.
