Sled dog races postponed

Sierra Sun

The annual Truckee Sled Dog Races, sponsored by the Truckee Lions Club and usually held on Presidents’ Birthday weekend in February at the Truckee Airport, have been postponed until February, 1999.

The Lions Club hopes that, with a year’s sabbatical, the business community will welcome the return of the races with renewed support.

For 20 years, the Truckee Lions have organized and sponsored the sled dog races as the club’s major fund-raiser. The profits have been used in the Truckee community to provide eye exams, glasses and hearing aids for the needy.

The money was also used to raise and train seeing eye dogs, provide student scholarships, provide teacher training and curriculum for the Lions Quest Drug Awareness Program, youth activity programs and other humanitarian needs.

Last February’s races netted the Lions club just under $10,000.
