Softball loses two

Saturday’s double-header against Fernley wasn’t an uplifting experience for the THS softball squad. Dropping two games to the Vaqueros, 5-9 and 1-8, the Wolverines are starting out league play at the bottom, all thanks to a handful of tough breaks.

In the warm ups for the first game, starting pitcher Kaley White hurt her elbow right before the game was supposed to start. The nod went to number two pitcher Amber Harder.

“Amber came through on both games without any warm-up,” coach Jack Howard said. “She did a real good job for us.”

The first game was pretty strong except in one inning they allowed five unearned runs.

Julie Rohrback had a solo homerun, though.

Shellie Snell, White, Jessie Turner and Erica Rice all hit 1 for 3 in the first game, with Rice nailing a triple. The outs were solid ones, at least.

In the second game, Corina Mincey went 2 for 3 and Snell and Harder 1 for 3.

“The girls hit the balls real hard, but they were right at people,” Howard said.

The hits were inopportune, as well. They stranded nine runners in the second game.

Up next is a double header against Yerington on Saturday in Yerington. Game times are noon and 2 p.m.

“I hope we will have better news after Saturday,” Howard said. “They’re having a tough time this year, too.”

But they’re also 4-3 in league play, compared to Truckee’s 0-8 in league play, 4-10 overall.
