Softball: Truckee swept by Manogue

The Truckee softball team’s two-out comeback magic ended ” along with its season ” in a painful 8-7 loss at Bishop Manogue on May 15 in the NIAA 3A Northern League Softball Tournament.

Down 8-4 in its final at-bat, Truckee scored three runs after two batters struck out following a leadoff walk by Kelly Stephens. After Stephens scored on a throwing error by shortstop Beth Reedy, Amber Harder drew a walk to set up Julie Rohrback’s two-run double.

But Alycia Smith, Truckee’s leading hitter, flew out, and Manogue swept the best-of-three series to advance to the state championships.

Knowing it would have to play nearly flawless defense to beat Bishop Manogue in the series, the Truckee defense faltered ” committing 14 errors in its two defeats.

In a 9-2 loss on Friday, sloppy Truckee defense gave Manogue a five-run fifth inning and an eight-run lead.

The losses were especially tough for Harder, the lone senior on a young Truckee squad made up mostly of freshmen and sophomores. She inspired her teammates all year with her constant energy and understood her leadership role.

“You have to be up all the time,” she said. “When you’re down it’s like a virus that spreads through the whole team.”
