South Tahoe boys basketball sinks Lakers

The North Tahoe High boys basketball team got a taste of a higher level competition Monday night when it hosted 4A foe South Tahoe.

Despite absorbing an 80-39 defeat, however, Lakers coach David Hansen said he scheduled the Vikings as a learning experience.

“I need to prepare them better to play a superior opponent,” he said.

Hansen said the Lakers were plagued by turnovers and lack of composure and that his boys needed to focus more on basic things like jump stops, pivots, patience and passing.

It is these things that the Lakers focused on during yesterday’s practice in preparation for today’s Northern 3A rivalry match-up with Truckee.

The Wolverines beat North Tahoe 60-23 last Thursday at the Sutro Classic in Dayton, and Hansen said Truckee could throw anything at the Lakers this evening.

Tipoff for tonight’s game is 7:30 p.m. The varsity girls play at 6 p.m.

On Monday, South Tahoe (2-2) started fast and never let up on its way to its win.

The Vikings led 24-8 after one quarter and extended their lead to 34 at halftime.

Again, North Tahoe’s high scorer was Michael Forte, who went for eight points against the Vikings.

South Tahoe was led by Vince Capellino, who scored a career-high 26 points, and K.J. Allister with 20. Dan Vallejo also scored 10.

The Lakers and Vikings are scheduled to play again on Dec. 18 in South Lake Tahoe.
