Alder Creek Middle School basketball tryouts
Tryouts for the Alder Creek Middle School girls basketball team will be held in the school’s gym Monday through Wednesday, Aug. 18-20. Tryouts for eighth-grade players will be held from 4-5:30 p.m., while sixth- and seventh-graders try out from 5:30-7 p.m. All athletes must have a physical/sports screening before tryouts.
Aloha Festival
The Kawaiulu ‘o’ Tahoe Outrigger Canoe Club is hosting the second annual Aloha Festival at Donner Lake’s West End Beach on Aug. 17 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. The public is invited for a day of Hawaiian music, food, beer, bungee jumping, crafts, free canoe rides and the Aloha Outrigger Canoe Races. Funds raised from the event will be used to support the club’s race efforts. There’s still room for plenty of teams of five people to compete. Cost is $40 per seat or $200 per boat. Free soccer referee clinic
Learn how to referee your child’s AYSO games by attending a free “mini” clinic at the Pomin field on Monday, Aug. 18 at 5 p.m. In order to ensure the safety of the players, the National AYSO office has mandated a rule for the U10, U12 and U14 divisions: “No ref, no game.” Parents may also become AYSO certified referees by attending the three-part referee clinic in Tahoe City on Aug. 11 from 6-8 p.m. at the TCPUD board room; Aug. 12 from 6-8 p.m. at the TCPUD board room; or Aug. 14 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at Pomin Field in Lake Forest. Free soccer coaching clinic
Dave Fromer is providing local AYSO coaches (any division ” U6 through U14) with a free coaching clinic on Wednesday, Aug. 20, at 5:30 p.m. at the Pomin Field (near the Coast Guard Station in Lake Forest). Call 583-PLAY for more info.
Guided hike
Join Tahoe Rim Trail hike leaders Steve Balog and Julie Page on a free hike to the Mount Rose Waterfall on Aug. 17. Meet at the Mount Rose trailhead at 10 a.m. Participants will hike towards Mount Rose, stop at a waterfall for lunch and continue a loop back to the trailhead. The hike is a total of seven miles. Bring a lunch. Only children older than 10 and no dogs.
LUNA Chix road ride
Join the Tahoe LUNA Chix for another women’s-only road ride to Boca Reservoir on Aug. 19 at 5:45 p.m. Arrive on time as the ride will be leaving at 6 p.m. sharp. Road bikes are required. This easy, no-drop ride welcomes riders of all skill levels. Exit Interstate 80 at Hirshdale Road, cross the railroad tracks and park in the first parking lot on the right-hand side of the road. Giant for Women bicycle camp
Giant bicycles is offering a locals rate (excluding lodging) on the mountain bike/road bike women’s camp, the Ride and Retreat, at Northstar Resort on Aug. 22-24. The local’s rate is $300, as opposed to $400, and includes food, instruction, lift ticket, bike rentals and group activities. Instructors include mountain biking champion Tara Llanes and road Olympian Mari Holden, among others. The camp is open to beginners and intermediate riders.
