Bicycle demo scheduled for Aug. 12The Rocky Mountain Bicycles Demo Tour is coming to Truckee on Sunday, Aug. 12. The demo starts at noon at the Sawtooth Ridge trailhead just off Thelin on the 06. By 5 p.m. The demo party, sponsored by Cyclepaths Pedal andamp; Paddle, Tahoe Mountain Guides and Rocky Mountain Bicycles, is free and open to the public.Truckee ski racer raising funds to competeTruckee Olympic alpine ski racer Marco Sullivan started a new website, http://www.americandownhiller.com, that will provide personal commentary on training and racing, as well as skiing news and an avenue to donate money to allow him to continue his training with the U.S. Ski Team. Due to budget shortfalls on the U.S. team, athletes ranked outside of the top 30 in the world are being asked to take on their own expenses. Sullivanandamp;#8217;s expenses for the upcoming season have been estimated at $22,000 with the travel, training and racing costs. He will be racing all of the World Cup downhills and is looking to move into position to be a medal contender in 2014.Registration available for Hot August ChillThe annual Hot August Chill Open Water Swim put on by the Truckee Tahoe Swim Team is scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 19. The event offers three separate distances from West End Beach. The 500-, 1.2-mile and 1-mile events are sanctioned by USA Swimming and USMS/Pacific Masters. The 1/2-mile and 1-mile events count toward Open Water points, while the 500-yard swim is sanctioned as a novice swim. The 1-mile swim is the 2012 Championship event of the Open Water season. All swimmers must be current registered members of one of these organizations in order to compete. Pre-registration deadline is Aug. 12. The nine-hole tournament costs $30 a team and includes green fees, a goodie bag, awards and lunch. A second tournament will be held Sunday, Sept. 16 for golfers ages 15 and under. Cost is $15 and includes green fees, goodie bags, awards and lunch. Both tournaments start at 1 p.m. Golfers must have their own clubs and proper attire andamp;#8212; collared shirt, walking shorts/pants, closed-toe shoes. There will also be a youth race and adult novice race during the Championships on Aug. 25. In summer, biathletes leave their rifles on the range and replace skiing with running.
