Free softball campMembers of the North Tahoe softball team are teaching a free softball camp for children grades third through sixth in the North Tahoe High School gym on Tuesday and Wednesday, April 14 and 15. The camp will last from 10 a.m. until noon both days. Call Christina at 448-9530 for more information.Billy Dutton UphillThe Billy Dutton Uphill will celebrate its 20th anniversary on Sunday, April 12, with registration from 7-8 a.m. at the funnitel. The race benefits Cross Country Junior Olympics and is a celebration of the life of Billy Dutton, a search and rescue skier who lost his life to brain cancer more than 20 years ago. The course climbs 3.2 miles from the funnitel to High Camp, and can be done on cross-country skis, snowshoes or running shoes. A party will be held at High Camp with raffle prizes, music and food. Registration will be from 9-10:30 a.m. by the fireplace in the lodge. The contest starts at 11:30 a.m. Entry fee is $20. Everybody wins a prize and will go home with a certificate of achievement and a goody bag. Helmets are required. Additional activities will also include a snowman-making contest. Players who formerly played under North Tahoe Babe Ruth are now eligible to play in the Truckee organization. Included are those who live in Tahoe City, Kings Beach, Incline Village and other neighboring communities. Players should sign up by Monday, April 20. They may sign up at the large field at Truckee Regional Park on Tuesday, April 14, at 5:30 p.m. For more information call Pat at 530-582-1121.Beacon andamp; Eggs Beacon Search ContestCombine an Easter egg hunt with an avalanche beacon search and the result is the 3rd Annual Beacon andamp; Eggs beacon search contest at Alpine Meadows Ski Resort on April 12. Free registration will be at the Beacon andamp; Eggs tent near the top of Subway Chair Lift (next to the base lodge) from 9-11 a.m. The Le Mans-style start is at noon near the top of the Subway beginner lift. Raffle tickets will also be sold, and ticket holders will win other outdoor products. Competitors must provide their own beacons, probes and shovels. The league is for players grades third and fourth, fifth and sixth, and seventh through ninth. Games will be played Monday through Saturday. Fee is $75, or $70 for residents (includes jersey and picture package). Coaches are needed. There will also be softball skills clinics at Rideout Community Center from April 6-9. Cost is $30, or $25 for residents. The clinics are from 3:45-4:45 p.m. for players grades second through fifth, and from 2:45-3:45 for sixth through ninth. Mandatory preseason meetings for all players and coaches are scheduled for April 20 at Rideout. Seventh through ninth grades meet from 3:30-4 p.m., and third through sixth meets from 4:15-4:45 p.m. Sign-ups will be taken at Rodeout through April 10. The lacrosse league is for players grades sixth through 12th. Games are played at Riverview Sports Park and in Reno. Cost is $60 plus U.S. Lacrosse membership. The girls softball league is for players grades second through ninth. Games are played at various fields in Truckee and start April 20.Lifeguard trainingThe Northstar Property Owners Association is offering a series of six Red Cross Lifeguard Training and Recertification classes throughout May. Cost is $125 (includes material), or $45 for recertification. Must be 15 or older. Classes will be held May 2 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m.; May 9 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.; May 10 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m.; May 16 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.; May 17 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m; and May 23 starting at 9 a.m. To recertify, participants need only attend the May 17 class. Each class will consist of pool and classroom time. Bring a lunch, swim suit, towel and change of clothes. The training sessions, available for children of all abilities and taught by Director of Coaching Amy Machin-Ward, will run from June 22 to July 16, and again from July 20 to Aug. 13. Players will train twice a week at their preferred location. Truckee will host players ages 4 to 18 on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Tahoe Vista will host preschool- and elementary-age children Mondays and Wednesdays.
